Mechanisms for Improving Youth Mental Health, Idea Plaza Summary 1423

Studies have shown that adolescent mental health is declining globally, with a particularly severe impact on girls. The decline in girls’ mental health has been confirmed by global studies. A global survey of over 1.2 million people in 43 countries revealed a widening gender gap in mental health over the past 20 years. While boys’ mental health also showed a slight decline, the decline in girls’ mental health was significantly greater than that of boys. A longitudinal study in Australia also revealed an increase in symptoms of depression and anxiety throughout adolescence for both boys and girls. Furthermore, a longitudinal (panel) study conducted in Tokyo and London, UK, also found worsening symptoms of depression among girls. In this panel study, girls’ depressive symptoms worsened significantly from age 12 to 16 compared to boys. This trend toward increased symptoms of depression and anxiety throughout adolescence was consistent across cultures.

A closer look at international studies reveals an increasing burden on women. Studies have shown that academic pressure is increasing particularly sharply for girls. This overlaps with traditional feminine roles. Modern women bear a double psychological burden, balancing academic and professional success with traditional feminine roles (such as child-rearing and housework). Furthermore, young women are increasingly vulnerable to the influence of the internet. A longitudinal survey of 10- to 16-year-olds in Tokyo found that inappropriate internet use was associated with depression. The rapid penetration of the internet into adolescent life has created greater risks than in the past. Previously, sexual harassment and sexual violence only occurred face-to-face. In recent years, online abuse has become more prevalent. It has been reported that 8.1% of children worldwide have experienced some form of online sexual exploitation or sexual abuse.

Modern society is a stressful environment. Excessive stress can disrupt homeostasis, amplify anxiety, and lead to symptoms such as depression. Self-defense strategies involve avoiding chronic stress and taking measures to prevent it from becoming a health problem. Rather than being dominated by stress, you will acquire the skills to control stress. People who have acquired these skills seem to be able to live gracefully in modern society. One such technique is self-compassion. Being kind and compassionate to yourself is called self-compassion. It has been shown that self-compassion can help you overcome adversity. Furthermore, it not only reduces stress but also increases your sense of happiness.
