Wisdom for a Happy Retirement   Idea Plaza Summary 1341

Currently, advances are being made in technology to delay the onset and progression of dementia. Technological advances are making it possible to detect MCI, a precursor to dementia, from physical changes. This mild cognitive impairment (MCI) detection system uses a device called “UB-2” sold by Maxell. To use the device, subjects attach a magnetic sensor to the thumb and index finger of each hand. They then repeat four patterns of opening and closing their fingers for 15 seconds. If a person is prone to MCI, their finger movements will become irregular. This pilot experiment demonstrated an accuracy of approximately 80% in classifying healthy individuals from those prone to MCI. By taking measures such as regular exercise and taking medication at the MCI stage, it may be possible to slow the progression and maintain cognitive function.

In China and Southeast Asia, where the populations are large, the aging phenomenon is progressing rapidly. As this phenomenon progresses, the issue of dementia has gradually become a focus of attention. The nursing home industry is expected to grow at a rate of 30% annually over the next five years. The challenge lies in ensuring that facilities maintain the physical, mental, and social health of residents. Early detection and treatment of conditions like dementia would significantly reduce the burden on both residents and facilities. Such high-quality facilities would be socially recognized, generating benefits for both residents and operators. Developing tools for early detection and treatment would benefit not only Japan but also Southeast Asian countries.

In an era that people are expected to live to 100, even if they retire at 70, they still have 30 years left to live. We strive to live these remaining years with joy. Developmental psychologist Piaget speaks of “adjustment” and “assimilation.” Assimilation is the absorption of information, which he considers an important aspect of development. Adjustment refers to the process by which new information changes one’s knowledge. One of the joys and pleasures of life is the acquisition of knowledge and experience, thereby enhancing it. Humans continue to grow by absorbing new information and updating their knowledge every day. We find joy in this growth. We would like to spend our 30 years of retirement in an environment that we can easily “adjust” and “assimilate.”
